During the ten months, the business of which is exhibited by these tables, the sources of revenue have been so different from those of the previous year, and from what may be expected in future years, that the table of classified articles carried has not been prepared, under the belief that such table would be of little value for comparison. Instead, a table, E, embracing the business for eight months from November 1, 1860, to June 30, 1861, is submitted, showing the revenue from freights forwarded and received at each station on the main line and branches.
By an analysis of this table, it will be observed that the principal part of the revenue has been from freights transported southward. Thus, of the business at Louisville station for the period named, there was derived
From Freights forwarded Southward $252,190.71
From Freights received 51,713.73
   Excess of Freight forwarded $200,476.98
The freights forwarded being 83 per cent. of the whole amount, while freights received were but 17 per cent.
The business of Nashville station exhibits the same difference. Thus the revenue from freight business at that station, was as follows:
For Freights received $201,245.40
For Freights forwarded 14,343.43
   Excess of Freights received $186,901.97
The revenue from freights forwarded being only 6 6/10 per cent., while that for freights received was 93 4/10 per cent. of the whole amount of revenue from the station.
Of the through business proper, between Louisville and Nashville, 95 per cent. of the revenue was from freights received at Nashville, and only 5 per cent. from that forwarded or originating at Nashville. Hence, of every one hundred cars loaded at Louisville for Nashville, ninety-five were returned empty: that is, the Company performed 95 per cent. of the train service northward for through business, or 47 1/2 per cent. of the whole, without any compensation.
The business of local stations shows also that at many stations the revenue from freights received is in excess of that from freights forwarded; whereas in years of average crop, the revenue from transporting the produce of the country would be many times that arising from transporting merchandise and other articles for consumption. This has arisen from the failures of crop in 1860 on the line of the road, and in the States South, which received their supplies over the road. There was not only no surplus to send to market, but large quantities of flour and provisions were sent from Louisville, to supply the want of these articles.
