Report |
Of the Superintendent of the Alabama &
Florida Rail Road, of Florida |
Office of Superintendent Ala. &
Fla. R. R. Co. |
Pensacola, May 6th, 1861 |
|
To Col. Wm. H. Chase |
President Ala. & Fla. R. R. Co., of
Florida |
|
Sir, |
My last annual report stated
that track laying upon our road had reached the 33d mile. The track
was extended to the State line (45 miles ) in August. In Alabama the
track-laying was completed on the 3d inst., and the much desired
object of a railroad communication with Montgomery, and through
Montgomery with the whole rail road system of the country, was consummated. |
Our road, although built, is
not finished. Considerable work yet remains to be done. The company
and contractors nor being able to agree upon the amount and value of
this work or upon the construction of the contract with regard to
service performed for the contractors by the engine, their differences
were referred to an arbiter. Circumstances have thus far prevented the
parties from making any progress towards a settlement. |
Our rolling stock consists of 5
engines, which cost, when placed upon the road |

Besides the above we have
trucks complete for 10 cars and lumber on hand for their construction. |
With the exception of the
engine Arrow, our rolling stock is in good order. This engine
purchased at second hand to be used in the construction of the road
requires considerable repair to place it in good condition. |
Since my last annual report
additional side track has been laid down -- a store room and
additional engine shed built in Pensacola -- a turn table and
self-supplying water tank at Milner's station at a cost of |
$1112.69 1/2 |

The work of engine Arrow was
almost exclusively for the contractors. The value of that work being
one of the questions yet unsettled does not enter into the estimate of
earnings. |
No accident has occurred to
passengers, nor has any employee received serious injury. |
Those engaged in the service
of the company have exhibited commendable zeal, industry, and fidelity
in their several departments. |
Respectfully submitted, |
O. M. Avery |
