| Monday 27th May 1861 |
| The President called a meeting of the
Board this evening |
| Present Lewis E. Harvie Prest Wm Palmer, R
O Haskins, E. G. Leigh, Jno R Edmunds, Directors |
| The President reported to the Board that
he had offered to construct Gun Carriages and their fixtures and it was
ordered that the following should be put upon the Minutes, viz: |
| "The Company's Shops and the ordinary
labor required for the usual business of transportation being of greater
capacity than at this time needed; and with a view of retaining the
operatives in Employment at fair wages and serving the State at the same
time, the Company made propositions to the State to make Gun Carriages
and the various fixtures. The proposition was accepted and the surplus
labor of the Work Shops employed at such rates as ensured the Company
against loss. The Company is thus ensured the skillful operatives which
may be needed for larger business & serve the State also |
| The President also proposed to
send Engines and Cars to Gosport Navy Yard after its seizure by the
State troops and transport free of cost to the State all the Ordnance
and Munitions of war to any point of safety to be designated by the
State, this offer was declined by the Governor of the State and Military
Authorities. The Board of Directors unanimously approved the foregoing
and directed the President to continue the manufacture of such Gun
Carriages &c as would not interfere with the attention to the main
interest of the road. |

| Ordered that the Company
raised from the Employees of the Company be furnished with a Navy cap
and Flannel for Shirts and the President was authorized to make
arrangements for arms for the Company, provided the same could not be
furnished from the State or Government. |
