Colonel, |
I have in progress the
estimates for the proposed connection of R. Roads at Montgomery, and
have instructed the ground to be occupied. |
On reaching Selma and ascertaining the
status of the work on the Blue Mountain & Rome Connection I concluded
not to volunteer any advice in relation to the progression or suspension
of the work. The Company has committed itself to the work so far that an
immediate suspension would result in considerable loss. I gave Judge
Walker a certificate, addressed to you, for work done and supplies &c
furnished, amounting to $60,000. In this, no ??ary was aimed at, or
deemed necessary, as the Govt. has a Mortgage on the whole Road. The
amount certified to is not however beyond the value of work as fixed in
my schedule of prices, and of materials and supplies at present prices.
If the bonds are sent to me, please send such form of receipt as the
Dept. may require. |
Your dispatch of the 4th has been recd.
Genl. Buckner having left Mobile, I shall confer with his successor. |
Your letter of the 2d came to the office
during my absence. Capt. Haydon is now at Jonesboro E. Ten. On his
return I will consult with him as to the skeleton map of Kentucky &
Tennessee. The lumber for the duplicates of Watauga and Holston bridges
is now ready, and the framing in progress. |
Very Respectfully |
L. P. Grant |
