Major, |
Your letter of the 29th ult. enclosing a
letter of introduction to His Excellency John Gill Shorter, Governor of
Alabama, has been received. I will go to Montgomery and have an
interview with Gov. Shorter. The prospects are not encouraging for
completing the works proposed by Professor Thomassy, in the space of
time mentioned by him. I have made efforts to engage negro forces, but
as yet have met with no success. |
The stationary engine mentioned in a
former letter, proved on examination to be unfit for the purpose another
has been mentioned to me, which will be examined. |
The work of reconstructing the Watauga and
Holston bridges has been retarded by inclement weather our Railroads are
now blocked with snow. This will stop the lumber for Holston a few days.
Enough has gone forward I think to employ the hands during the delay. |
Capt. Hayden has suffered some annoyances
and indignities in obtaining pig metal for the castings required in the
bridges from Genl. Duff Green. As the matter may become the subject of
charges, and investigation hereafter, I will not at this time report the
substances of Capt. Hayden's statements to me. I am satisfied that Capt.
H. has acted with delicacy and forbearance, and strictly in accordance
with his duty and instructions. |
I have received Col. Gilmer's telegram in
relation to the Treasy Draft. Also concerning the contract and mortgage. |
Very Respectfully |
L. P. Grant |
