Locomotive Haul Drawing |
|
The above drawing is from the Great Reunion
of 1913's brochure. The drawing was made by John W. Wilcox (see initials
under the locomotive) of the Washington Artillery (of New Orleans).
Wilcox had been a sketcher during the war and it was suggested he draw
the Haul to be included in the program to be handed out. Wilcox is not
known to have been at the Haul, but had heard about it and may have seen
the article that was published in the May 29, 1910 Richmond Dispatch
(RD 5-29-1910)
which detailed the incident depicted. The article was by George T.
Darracott, a relative and supervisor under Sharp. |
The scene depicts the 8th Virginia Regiment
pulling one of the Alexandria, Loudoun & Hampshire Railroad locomotives
up the hill near their camp near Goose Creek, on the Little River
Turnpike. (See page 33 in my book). |
The drawing and its history was provided by
Griff Bartlett, a descendent of John Wilcox, and posted with his
permission. |
