January 1 In Winchester
2 Left at 8 pm to join Genl. Jackson's command which left Winchester yesterday
3 Joined Genl. Jackson at ??? Store at daylight. Command moved towards Bath. Encamped at Headquarters six miles from Bath
4 Commenced moving at daylight. Rode to ??? by train and then forward to Bath where I arrived at 6 1/2 pm. Our force took possession of Bath at 2 pm. Genl. Jackson moved on to river opposite Hancock where we encamped on the right on Mr. Lynn. I placed artillery in position and threw shells into Hancock at night
5 Col. Ashby took Flag of Truce to Hancock at 9 am. At 12 our batteries commenced bombarding the town. Cannonading rept upon ??? all day
6 At Headquarters today. In pm enemy shelled our camp and we moved from Mog?? River
7 Command commenced moving towards ??? Store at which place head of column arrived at dark. Roads smooth with ice and in a terrible condition
8 Relieved by Col. M. G. Harmon and left for Winchester at 12 o'clock in company with Maj. Hanks Chp S. S.

February 1 In Richmond Received orders from QM Genl. to go to Manassas {junction of Orange & Alexandria RR and Manassas Gap RR} and complete RR from that point to Centreville {about 5 miles} {Centreville RR Map}

3 Left at 7 1/2 am to report to Genl. Johnston at Manassas. Went to Plains Station, Manassas Gap RR and stayed all night
4 Left Plains Station at 8 am. Stopped at Gainesville till 11 am and then went to Manassas and from there went with Capt. Cone to see Genl. Johnston at Centreville
5 Left at 9 am for Manassas and took charge of work on the RR
6 Started for Richmond at 7 am and arrived at 4 1/2 pm

9 Left at 7 1/2 am for Winchester; arrived at Strasburg at 9 1/2 pm

2 - 8 At Manassas
9 At Manassas Army of Potomac, in command of Genl. J. E. Johnston, evacuated Manassas today. I left Manassas on the last train at 9 pm
10 Arrived at Bristoe at 5 am {4 miles from Manassas Station, on the Orange & Alexandria RR} and at Brandy Station {25 miles south of Bristoe Station} at 12 m where I stopped and opened telegraph office
11 Went to see Genl. Johnston at Rappahannock {Station, 5 miles north of Brandy Station}
12 Went to Culpepper {6 miles south of Brandy Station} and back to Brandy
13 At Brandy all day. Left for Culpepper at 10 pm. Relieved as Military RR Superintendent
14 At Culpepper till 10 1/2 am when I left for Richmond, where I arrived at 6 pm
15 In Richmond Assigned to duty in the QM Genl.'s office

3 In Richmond Started Genl. Johnston from Fredericksburg depot by special train at 10 am. 
4 In Richmond Hauled Manassas Gap RR Engine No. 3 from Fredericksburg Depot to 22nd and Main Street en route to {Richmond &} York River RR
5 In Richmond Put Engine No. 3 on York River RR
6 Spent last night at Virginia Central Depot waiting for troops to arrive from Gordonsville en route to Yorktown and the Peninsula. At 1 1/2 am walked into an open culvert at Central Depot and broke my left leg between knee and foot. Was carried to office by Mr. H. D. Whitcomb, General Superintendent, and at 6 am had my leg set and bandaged by Dr. Mate of Medical Infirmary. Carried home on a litter at about 7 am, Manson {his clerk} and Sturman with me.
