James M. Bibb cannot be certainly
identified from the available records. There is, however, one
candidate that cannot be ignored, while the other three James M.
Bibbs are poor candidates. My selection was born in Louisa County,
Virginia, just east of Charlottesville. He is found in the 1850
Census in Richmond working as a salesman. In the1860 Census, he is
in Albemarle County (which contains Charlottesville), age 30, with a
wife, Rosa, and two young children. He was a merchant, with Personal
Estate value of $17,500. Other than the documents below, we know
only that he died in 1880 in Richmond as a widower. |
After reading the record below,
it is clear that major questions are unanswered -- why was Bibb not
in the military? What did he do during 1863 and after June, 1864?
Why was he not given a commission in the QM Department? It is also
not clear how he got his Transportation Agent assignment, though he
was probably appointed verbally by Major Ashe as Ashe was trying to
improve the flow of freight. |
