Affairs of the Southern Railroads |
||
A
Congressional investigation was held in 1866 to determine whether the
railroads of the Confederacy should be allowed to operate as private
businesses or whether they had been part of the Confederate Government and
should be considered "spoils of war." The transcripts of the
various investigative sessions runs 480 pages of very small type. Attached
as an appendix are annual reports from 24 railroads. Most are late 1865 or
1866 reports, with extensive recaps of the losses suffered during the
later part of the war, the condition of the road when the war ended, and
actions taken to restore the roads to operations. There are many fragments
of information from earlier years. I have found only two copies of this book. One is in the Rare Book room of Wake Forrest University, at location HE 2762 U6 1867. The other copy is in the Hagley Library in Wilmington, DE Below are the reports included: |
