There is not a moment to be lost in sending food to our
army near Petersburg. If the Commissary has none in store, we must
inspect all in the town for sale and obtain from the citizens their
private stock on hand. The officers of the Commissariat should begin
now, and the meat should be put in the cars and sent off before they
sleep. If there is enough within the town to avail anything let it be
immediately obtained and forwarded. I cannot go out or I would have gone
to your office. Pray inform me what is the prospect and means adopted.
The distress of our brave defenders render me unaccountably anxious. Can
it be that no motive of the necessity preceded the letter of Genl Lee
which you sent to me for perusal. |
