Enclosed you will find a statement of the numbers of
persons & mules employed on the Road since we broke ground with
the quantities of provisions required & received. Bacon is the
only article of such we have had sufficient; meal & corn have been
very scarce for over 6 weeks & had it not been for purchases made
by us of Flour, Corn & Oats our Negroes & mules would have
starved: frequent representations to your supply Agent has had no
effect & we have been forced to enter the market & purchase at
very high prices. We have been obliged to issue Flour to negroes at
$150 per bbl & buy corn at $25 per bushel, so that our subsistence
has cost us about $5000 more than it would if provisions had been
furnished regularly & our mules have gone down very fast causing
injury loss & delay to the work. We enclose a bill of articles
purchased with prices attached that we have paid, with the cost by
contract to which they should have been furnished. Be kind enough to
approve & return. Also a requisition for 700 lbs Bacon. Our Smoke
House has been broken into & some 300 lbs stolen, a deficiency
that we will make up as soon as the purchase can be made. Please
return at once as our issue day is Tuesday.
