Dear Sir, |
Since you left here, the
threats of destroying some of our Bridges, I learn, have been
repeated, & several suspicious persons (white & black) have
been caught by the night watch. The Dr {Dr.
Lewis, the Superintendent of the Western & Atlantic RR} has
two Watchmen at each of the long Bridges, but neither of them have a
Gun, they are consequently some what unsafe themselves, & less efficient
than if armed. These men though trustworthy, are poor, & not
willing to purchase a gun however much they feel the want of one, as
the want might be only temporary. The preservation of the bridges you
know is a matter of great importance to the state, & if you can
spare a dozen muskets for that object, please send them up. When a
Watchman leaves, I will see that his gun is returned to the depot,
subject to your order. |
The new company here, made up
of the Mechanics & Road employees are anxious to transform
themselves into an artillery company (entirely for state service) as a
portion of them are restless, for service & will probably leave to
join companies now called, or soon to be called, might it not be well
to let them carry out their present notion & let them take charge
of the two pieces of artillery called the (Wallace Cannon). The pieces
would no doubt be kept in fine order, & I have no doubt but in a
short time it would be one of the most formidable artillery companies
in all the land. |
