Sir,
Your letter 2 Inst has been received and regret to have to inform you that I can render you no assistance whatever in facilitating the shipment of corn for the relief of your citizens. I would take pleasure in aiding you in your patriotic efforts in supplying the needy with corn by giving you an order to the R R Agt at Americus but could not be permitted (as a government officer) to ask the Rail Road Companies to ship for private parties, the practice once commenced might lead to very serious abuses.
I will however take the liberty of referring your letter together with Mr Youngs statement to Gov Brown and ask his co-operation in your behalf.
Wishing you all success in your laudable undertaking
I beg to Remain
Your obt Sevt
Wm Bacon Capt & AQM
