Genl G T Beauregard
Commanding Department

General,
Being informed that orders have been issued ??? to take up ??on the rails from the Macon & Brunswick Rail Road terminating at this place & believing that if the necessity of the Road to public & private interests here had been justly represented to you, that the order would not have issued. I beg leave to state briefly its indispensable value to the City of Macon as a Corporation.
There are (1200) Twelve Hundred indigent families of soldiers & refugees resident here, who are supported by charity dispensed through the Agency of the municipal authorities. The fuel fuel entirely & the subsistence mainly for the purpose is brought over the Macon & Brunswick R. Rd. because of the other R Road entering this City, the Central is repaired for a short distance through a country pillaged by the enemy & ??? ??? ??? pursuit to ???. The Macon & Western runs through to a section bare of wood & provisions, while the South Western is monopolized the needs of the Government, & the Macon & Brunswick alone services & furnish the convenience that we are obliged to have.
Very Respectfully
Yr obt Sevt
L. Collins
Mayor
