Little Rock July 8th 1862

Genl. A. Rust,
Col. A. Nelson and Capt Dunnington
DuVall's Bluff

Our position on White River is no longer tenable and has ceased to be valuable if we could hold it. I desire, therefore, that, with as much secrecy and order as possible, taking every precaution to mask the movement from the enemy and to prevent confusion and panic among our own troops, the public stores &c, be moved here by cars and wagons, what cannot be moved destroyed and our forces withdrawn, the cavalry in rear, artillery next, infantry next, the {Memphis & Little Rock} Railroad to be broken up as far as practicable by the cavalry in retiring. Further details will be arranged by you. Having but one Engineer on the railroad who can be trusted, it may be impossible to return the train to you tonight, but it will be done if it can be. There should be an issue of five days rations to the troops. If pressed by the enemy, you may check him at or near Bayou Meto.
