   I. In accordance with instructions from the commanding general, Maj. Gen. M. C. Butler will proceed to South Carolina. The troops will be conveyed by railroad, via Wilmington, to Columbia {This route would be to Greensboro, then east on the North Carolina RR, then south on the Wilmington & Weldon RR, the Wilmington & Manchester RR, and the South Carolina RR. The much shorter route from Greensboro direct to Columbia (on the North Carolina RR and the Charlotte & South Carolina RR) would not be used in order to not interfere with the movement of food and fodder north, on that route, to Richmond.}, unless travel is interrupted on that route, in which case they will be conveyed by the upper route. General Butler will report his arrival at Columbia to Lieutenant-General Hardee. The men will take with them their arms, their cooking utensils, and equipments, and will be prepared for a winter campaign. The horses and transportation of the division will be disposed of in accordance with instructions previously given to General Butler.
