General M. L. Smith, Chief Engineer, Army of Tennessee

General Hood desires you to take immediate steps to prepare bridge timbers to reconstruct the bridges on the railroads leading from this place {Atlanta} to Tennessee, and also to prepare duplicate bridges for all bridges in our rear that are liable to be destroyed by the enemy. He desires you to take the whole matter in charge, and trusts that in the event that there shall be occasion to rapidly rebuild any of the structures you will be prepared for the emergency.
