I send [S. R.] Gist's and [W. H. T.] Walker's brigades, best troops {about 5,000 men}, and two batteries {a requirement for about 125 cars -- some 8 trains}. Keep them together, if practicable, under Gist. They will go by Selma and Mobile {by river boat from Selma to Mobile, then Mobile & Ohio RR to Meridian, and Southern of Mississippi RR to Vicksburg}. Give all assistance possible.
