Terrible Accident |
A freight engine on the South
Carolina Railroad, the "Thos. C. Perrin," burst her boiler yesterday
morning, about eleven o'clock, in the railroad yard, in this city,
instantly killing the engineer, a Mr. Keels, and seriously, if not
fatally, injuring one of the firemen, an Irishman, called Billy, but
whose surname we could not learn. The head of the unfortunate engineer
was terribly mangled -- portions of the brain being found ten or fifteen
feet from the body. An inquest was held on the body, and a verdict in
accordance with the above facts was rendered. Another fireman made a
very narrow escape, having only left the engine two or three minutes
before the explosion. Fragments of the engine were found in various
directions, and some of them fully three hundred yards from the scene of
the disaster. The rails under the locomotive, as well as the frog, were
broken in several places, and the cross-ties completely splintered.
