Freshet |
On Tuesday, of last week, this
section was visited by one of the heaviest falls of rain in our
recollection. The cellars throughout the town were generally under
water, and the wash had so affected the railroad {King's
Mountain RR}, that connection with Chester was seriously
interrupted for several days. On the Charlotte & South Carolina
Road considerable damage was done to the bridges and trestles, but we
learn ere this, the damage has been repaired. The Congaree is stated
to have risen within a foot or two of the freshet of 1852, which
destroyed the railroad bridge over it, so from this we would infer
that the rain has been pretty general throughout the State. In our
immediate vicinity, there has been a great destruction of bridges and
fences, but it is fortunate at this season of the year, that we have
ample time to prepare for the crops. The weather is still cold, windy
and unsettled. |
