Arrival and Departure of Yankee Prisoners |
Of the five hundred and fifty
Yankee prisoners who left Richmond, four hundred and five reached
Augusta Monday afternoon, and left an hour afterwards on the Savannah
Road {Augusta & Savannah RR; Central (of Georgia)
RR} for Macon, on their way to Americus, near which place they
are to be imprisoned. |
Two of the prisoners were
frozen to death between Weldon and Raleigh
{Raleigh & Gaston RR}, and twelve others were so severely frozen
that they had to be left at the hospital in the latter place. |
Thirty-one of the prisoners
escaped between Branchville and Augusta {South
Carolina RR} from one of the box cars. Let our people look out
for them, says the "{Augusta}
Constitutionalist." |
