Wilmington & Manchester R. R. Company
By reference to our advertising column, it will be seen that the Directors of the above Company will hold their annual meeting in Wilmington on the 20th inst.
It will also be seen by the notice of the Treasurer, in this issue, that the Directors have declared a dividend upon the capital stock of 9 per cent., of which 6 per cent. is due to the present, and 3 per cent. to the preceding year. This speaks in terms commendable to those who have thus judiciously managed the machinery of this great public improvement.
We recently had the pleasure of a ride over this road and are pleased to announce to those interested the very excellent condition in which the road has been kept; and while much praise is due to the President and Directors, the highest encominin is due to the General Superintendent, Mr. J. P. Robertson, for the prompt performance of the arduous duties which devolve upon him, the result of which is the dividend which has been declared and which has surpassed the expectation of the best wishers for the prosperity of the Road. We think the Directors fortunate indeed in obtaining the services of a gentleman so well prepared to perform the duties of his office, and trust that they will reward him with a salary that will induce him to retain his position. Up to this time we learn that the receipts of the road have been a few thousand dollars more than those of the past year, but then the expenses of the road have been considerably greater than heretofore, owing to the fact, that it has been engaged a larger portion of the time, in the transportation of troops and government stores at reduced rates, thereby being of incalculable service to the noble cause in which our Government is engaged. And while the road has labored under trying difficulties during the present year, not a serious accident has happened, within our knowledge, either from neglect of the officers of the trains or from any other circumstance. Long may it continue to prosper, while officered as it now is.
