NP, SB 5/1/1863

From the Southern Banner (Athens, Ga.)

May 1, 1863

Heavy Robbery
The Macon Confederate of the 25th instant says: "We understand that over $40,000 in gold and other valuables, the property of the Merchants and Planters Bank of Ravannah, was stolen from the train, night before last, on its down trip from the city, between No. 4 and 5 stations on the Central {(of Georgia)} Railroad. The money was secured in a box and was placed in a car, doubly locked and looked after by the messenger, at each station, until arrival at No. 5, all being safe up to that time, but soon after the box was found to be abstracted, with contents, and there is no clue, as yet, to the mystery."
