N. C. Railroad
We have been furnished by an official source with the following statement showing the receipt from passengers and freight on the N. C. Railroad for seven months past, compared with the receipts for corresponding months of last year:
  Receipts in 1861 - '62 Receipts in 1862 - '63 Increase
Sept'r $46,787.22 $116,050.00 $70,162.78
Oct'r 58,656.48 156,664.10 98,007.62
Novb'r 64,670.52 128,824.83 64,254.31
Decb'r 53,442.98 124,799.34 71,356.36
Jan'y 57,827.11 147,407.41 89,580.30
Feb'y 58,586.91 128,762.14 70,175.43
March 91,014.40 166,428.30 69,413.82
  $430,885.50 $963,386.12 $532,950.52
Although the above shows an increase in revenue of over $532,000, we do not think it a matter to cause much felicity on the part of the public at large, for no doubt the most of the increase is owing to the enormous charges for freight and passengers. Railroads, like speculators, are striving to make all they can out of the necessities of the times. We record the "statement," but are unwilling to accord any congratulation on the showing. The revenue has been increased but the accommodations have been decreased.
