The Southern Troops |
The troops which rumour said
were to have arrived here two days ago, and which rumour also expected
hourly on yesterday, have not been heard from. An indefinite dispatch
was received here last evening from railroad authorities at Weldon,
stating that Beauregard's troops were expected there, but nothing had
been ascertained respecting them at all. On Monday morning some twelve
or fifteen wagons were stationed at the Petersburg depot to receive the
baggage, but neither soldiers nor baggage arrived. |
Since writing the above, we
have learned upon inquiry that a telegram was received by Gov. Letcher,
from Governor Pickens, asking that preparation be made for three
thousand troops, who would arrive in daily detachments of six hundred.
Late yesterday the President of the Northeastern Railroad telegraphed to
a friend in this city that four hundred and fifty troops left Charleston
on the previous day for Richmond, and we understand that they are
expected to arrive here in an extra train this forenoon. |
