The Raid on the {Virginia} Central Railroad
Soon after the "Enquirer" had gone to press on Friday night, intelligence was received of the capture by the Yankee raiders of the bridge over Southanna river, which they immediately destroyed. The bridge was defended gallantly for several hours by eighty men belonging to Col. D. J. Godwin's regiment, commanded by the lieutenant colonel. The enemy's force consisted of about twelve hundred cavalry, equipped as mounted infantry, and accompanied by two pieces of artillery -- 12 pound howitzers. The Southanna bridge is a trestle structure, about one hundred and twenty-five feet long, and twenty-five feet high. It crosses the Southanna river three miles above Hanover Court House, and about twenty one above the city.
On their way thither the raiders burned several pieces of trestle work near Hanover Court House. *****
