| Petersburg, April 8, 1861 |

| I have passively noticed, in
one or two of my letters, the occasional transportation of ordnance
and ammunition through this city to the South. I am now enabled to
give an aggregate, both of quantity and weight of the implements of
war that have passed South over the Petersburg
and Weldon Railroad {the
Petersburg RR} up to April 6 |
| Quantity |
Weight |
| 5 Bbls, 3,500 Kegs Powder |
113,300 lbs |
| 2 Guns |
70,000 lbs |
| 7 Mortars |
37,000 lbs |
| 10,455 Balls and Shells |
727,655 lbs |
| Total weight |
953,455 lbs |
|
| {Considering weight
alone, this amount of material would have required about 60 cars} |
