The Recent Fire
We refer to this sad calamity again, for the purpose of revising our previous notice and correcting as far as possible, errors we were led into by the imperfect statements of opinions obtained through unofficial sources.
We are pleased in being able to state that a large amount of corn, oats and rye, and about 40 hogsheads of sugar have been recovered from the scene of conflagration, which will reduce the aggregate estimate of the loss. The sums put down by us, viz: $20,000,000, was the result of estimates made by several gentlemen, not connected with any of the de?? is but who appeared to be well informed upon the subject. Our estimate was based, not upon what were the cost prices of the articles and materials destroyed, but upon their value at the present time in replacing them.
Another very important matter we think it proper to refer to, is that touching the statement of the loss of life. No evidence of the remains of human bones have been discovered, and we infer, as we expressed the hope, that the two soldiers named were not burned.
The information received touching those who were most con*****. One of the gentlemen, Dr. Thompson of the Medical Purveyor's department, we regret to learn received a painful facture of limb during his ???g efforts to save property, by the fall of a bale of cotton.
Perhaps our information relative to the guard refusing admittance to volunteers until instructed to do so, was not correct as we have investigated the source ??? the story originated, and can find ??? story evidence corroborating the statement. Not withstanding our informants are gentlemen of the highest respectability and never would have propagated such a report unless they had thought it correct, yet there seems to have been a misapprehension, and in consequence, misappreciation of case and locality. We regret, if, as we suppose, injustice has been done, and hope that the investigation progressing will disclose the fact that our information was erroneous.
As soon as the court martial, convened to investigate all the facts connected with the origin of the fire, losses, &c., shall have concluded their labors we will take pleasure if they offer them for publication, in giving the facts to the public.
