The work upon the Shreveport &
Marshall railroad which was being pushed with all the energy and
resources of the government, under charge of Capt. T. G. Patton, of Maj.
Gen. Canby's staff, was suspended on the 5th inst., by an order from
Maj. Gen. Hawkins. The secretary of war has directed all work of a civil
character now being carried on by the army, to cease, probably for
financial reasons. |
