Railroad Accident |
A collision took place between
the Express trains on the North Carolina Railroad on Wednesday night
about nine miles this side of Charlotte. The two engines and several of
the coaches were completely demolished, but we are glad to learn that no
one was killed. One of the engineers, Mr. White, formerly from
Wilmington, was very seriously injured. Both legs will probably have to
be amputated; besides, his body was severely lacerated. A brakesman, it
is thought, will also loose both legs. Some three or four others,
connected with the trains, were injured slightly. The escape of the
passengers from injury was considered miraculous. |
The accident happened at the
regular passing place of the two Express trains. The train from
Goldsboro arrived at the place in schedule time, and was waiting for the
train to arrive from Charlotte and run off upon the turnout. The train
fro Charlotte arrived, a little behind time, but the engineer was unable
to stop it, owing to some derangement with the engine, and it ran full
speed on a down grade into the other train. We learn that Mr. White died
Friday. |
