The Norfolk Day Book
says 1250 bales of cotton arrived in this city on Friday and Saturday
last, from Memphis, Tenn. This is the first instalment of twenty five
thousand bales that are to come over this route from that city, from
one house. Another house is to send twelve thousand bales, several
hundred of which have arrived and been reported. |
{This would have been some 830 box cars; the
route started on the Memphis & Charleston RR, then the East
Tennessee & Georgia RR, the East Tennessee & Virginia RR, the
Virginia & Tennessee RR, South Side RR and the Norfolk & Petersburg
RR}. Cars rarely travelled over more than two consecutive roads
without being unloaded and reloaded on the next road. |
