From the American Citizen (Canton, Miss.)

June 2, 1862
Mississippi Central Railroad -- "Cotton Money"
In justice to the above named Railroad Company, we publish the following letter of the Secretary to the Mississippian:

Office of Mississippi Central R,. R. Co.
Holly Springs, May 26, 1862
Ed. Mississippian,
In a late number of the Canton Citizen, appears an article accredited to you, in which it is charged that the "Railroad companies" of this State persistently refuse to receive the paper of the State of Mississippi, commonly known as cotton money.
I feel it to be a duty incumbent on me, in the absence of the President, to deny most positively this charge, so far as this company is concerned. We have received and disbursed many thousands of dollars of said currency, and still continue to receive and pay it out. If, in any single instance, any employee of this company has declined it, such refusal has not come to the knowledge of this office, nor was his act authorized by instructions from me. We shall aid the cause of the South to the utmost of our ability, and be among the last to cripple our own State and citizens by discrediting the "Cotton Currency."
We shall continue to receive it as long as it can be made available in payment of our liabilities. As an act of justice, I ask a place for this in your paper.
A. J. McConnico, Sec'y
