The Southern (Mississippi) Railroad
The Mississippian has been informed that it is the purpose of the Government to place the Southern railroad in good condition, from Meridian to Jackson. This will give a great advantage to the Government, not now possessed, and do much to revive the hopes of the people of Mississippi west of Pearl river, besides adding vastly to their convenience. The whole country east of the Big Black is already recovered, and is likely to remain, without dispute, in our possession. There is, then, everything to gain by a reconstruction of the Southern road to Jackson. We hope it will be done as early as possible, and that measures will be taken to hold permanently the capital of Mississippi as a base of future operations. There is just now nothing to fear from the Yankees about Vicksburg.
