Serious Railroad Disaster |
On Saturday morning last the baggage car
attached to the train going west, on the North Carolina Railroad, took
fire when near Durham's Station, from a spark, and was entirely
consumed, with all the baggage and four bodies of deceased soldiers
which were being taken home. The car of the Southern Express Company,
with its contents, including money, was also destroyed. |
The Raleigh "Progress" says that
both the Express Agent and the Baggage Master were in other cars, and
no one was present to extinguish the fire until it was too late. The
train passed on after the car was consumed, and ran off near
Mebansville, smashing several cars. No passengers hurt. |
