Our Railroad |
Next in importance to the salvation of the
country, or rather the avoidance of civil war, we regard the
successful progress of our Railroad enterprises. Hence we announce
with gratification, the fact, that a corps of Engineers, have
commenced, or are about commencing, the location of the Road {Western
North Carolina RR} from Swananoa gap to this place. The Chief
Engineer, Mr. S. W. Presnell, we understand, is competent and
energetic; so it may confidently be expected that his work will
progress with commendable rapidity. It is to be hoped, that when all
things are ready, the work of grading the road will go on
uninterrupted to its completion. Almost all we need, now, to render
this mountain country the most prosperous and desirable, is Railroads,
and we earnestly beseech our people to become fully alive to the
magnitude of the subject, and keep so, until the Iron Horse shall
triumphantly career over our hills and valleys. |
