The Macon Confederacy has been permitted to make the
following interesting extracts from an official report made to
General Ira R. Foster, by Captain J. A. Erwin, A. Q. M. He says: |
I found the railroad {Western & Atlantic
RR} destroyed from Atlanta to the Etowah bridge -- the ties
burnt and a considerable proportion of the rails crooked, probably
one half the rails bent. Etowah bridge is undisturbed, and the track
from that point to the Resaca and Rome branch is uninjured, except
two small bridges, near Adairsville, which were burnt by our
cavalry. The depot at Altoona is not burnt. The Cartersville depot
is burnt. The depots from Cartersville to Resaca are not destroyed.
The bridge at Resaca and the track from that place to Dalton is
destroyed, and most of the rails moved back. The enemy hold Dalton
with one Brigade, reported one thousand strong, and are running
trains to that place. |
