Friend says an attempt was made on Monday the 6th inst., to burn the
Aucilla trestle on the Pensacola & Gulf {Georgia?}
Railroad. It was the work
of deserters, and a part of the programme of the enemy to prevent
troops being brought up from the east to take a hand in the late
fight. Eight men were detached from the main body of the enemy for
this purpose, and were in command of the Wm. W. Strickland, a Captain
in the Yankee service. Two of the raiders have been killed -- Chas. K.
Martin (well known in this section) and J. Johnson. Strickland is a
prisoner, and no doubt will be shot or hung. He acknowledges having
set fire to the bridge with his own hands. |
