Yankees at Grenada |
Railroad Destroyed |
Grenada, Jan. 5 |
|
The enemy in the late raid
damaged one engine badly and two slightly; they burned twenty-four
cars and machine shop at Grenada. |
The track is not much damaged. |
From Duckhill to Vaiden {the
Mississippi Central RR} thirteen trestles were burned. |
The Vaiden track was
considerably damaged. |
Seven trestles were burned
from Vaiden to West's. All depots and water tanks but one were burned
south of Grenada. |
The first official notice of
the appearance of the enemy was at nine o'clock on the night of the
30th. The enemy was then camped in the vicinity of the road. One train
escaped and one was cut off. |
Why we received no notice of
this movement you can perhaps judge. |
Trains will run to West
station, connecting at Canton with Jackson. |
The road will be repaired to
Grenada as soon as possible. |
