{From the minutes of the Directors' Meeting of the North Carolina RR, August 29, 1862}

 
Co Shops, Aug 29th 1862
 
   The Board met at the call of the President. Present:

   The President announced Mr Sumner's acceptance of the Office of Superintendent.
   Kemp P. Battle, President of the Chatham R. R. Co was admitted and presented the following:
   "To the Board of Directors N.C. R. R. C.
Gentlemen:  The Chatham R. R. C., having adopted the City of Raleigh as their Eastern terminus, proposes to the No. Car. R. R. C. that the latter shall grant them the privilege of widening the graduation of the No. Car. R. R. extending the culverts, drains &c on the right or North side of said Road from Raleigh to Page's, a distance of eight miles, to the extent necessary to receive another track for the use of the Chatham R. R. C. the additional track to be laid at a distance of eight feet between the outer rail of the No. Car. R. R. track and the inner or next adjacent rail of the Chatham R. R., such widening to be at the cost of the Chatham R. R. C. and in such manner as not to interfere with the business of the N. C. R. R. C. The said additional track is to be connected with the No. Car. R. R. at Raleigh and at Page's at which points the Chatham R. R. C. proposes to cross the N. C. R. R. and to continue their track to the Coal fields in Chatham County."
   The Board of Directors having considered the above proposition after examination and discussion it was agreed to Mr Gorrell voting in the Negative. Messrs D. M. Barrington and J. W. B. Watson were appointed to consult with B. F. Moore, Attorney of the Co. and to make and execute a contract with the Chatham R. R. C. embodying the principles of said proposal and inserting such stipulations as will effectually protect the interests of the No. Car. R. R. C. and the Chatham R. R. C. agree to pay all the legal expenses of drawing up said contract.
   On motion: Ordered That an ordinary well be dug on the property of the Company under the direction of Mr. Gorrell.
   Ordered: That the President and Superintendent be authorized to attend the R. R. meeting at Columbia and to revise the Tariffs and Fares to correspond with those of connecting roads and to put them in operation at their discretion.
