In July I purchased in
Western North Carolina through R. F. Pornon an agent some 36 000 lbs {2+
carloads} of bacon. This bacon was delivered to the Western NC
RR; a portion of it at Statesville, and a portion at Icard's station.
One car load of it, car No. 183 N. C. R. R. {North
Carolina RR} containing 15 567 lbs came to Raleigh, laid there
some days & then came down to Goldsboro who sends the car back to
Raleigh. This is the last I can hear of the car. I derive above facts
from a party I sent to trace up the bacon. The N. C. R R. lost the
bacon & should pay for same. Following papers are enclosed as
evidence in this matter. Find copies of their rail road receipts
acknowledging the original receipts of this bacon. Next a copy of a
statement from books of the NC RR at Salisbury, and a certificate of
the Agent of that Co. there. Next a memorandum statement concerning
car 183 containing this 15 567 lbs bacon from A. D. Parshall from
Raleigh to Goldsboro. On the back of this is a certificate of W.
Taylor Agt/N. C. R. R. at Goldsboro. After diligent search nothing
further can be heard of the bacon. There was gross carelessness in the
officers of the Co. The cost of this bacon was 36 cts per lb at the
depots. The Co. should be made to pay for. I only regret is the
scarcity of this and that they cannot be made to return the same
quantity of bacon. ??? this officer co?? pays this Co. I have thought
proper to submit this problem to you. |
