| The Secretary of War instructs me to
acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the 23rd inst (with the
enclosure of a letter from G. W. R. Bailey, Engineer, O. R. Rail
Road {Bailey was Engineer on the New Orleans,
Opelousas & Great Western RR}) and to say that the
condition of the Country on the Atchafalaya river will receive the
prompt attention of this Department. As soon as the Bureau of
Engineers can be organized, a competent officer will be ordered to
the locality, to examine and report as to its condition and
necessities. |
