E H Gill Esq  {Superintendent, Richmond & Petersburg RR}

Dear Sir,
   The Atlantic Engine, one that was run on the corn train was bought by Col. Fremont {Superintendent, Wilmington & Weldon RR} and has been given up to him.
   The Genl. Huger {Captured Baltimore & Ohio RR #208} the other Engine of that train broke her wheel and will not be out for sometime.
   We have been running our Engine the McKensie on that train from Richmond to Tarboro{, N. C.}, and she is now laid up.
   Under the circumstances we are left no alternative than to call upon you to put on Engines from here to Richmond to haul those two corn trains, and as they will not convey more than half the quantity required for the government we shall be obliged to devote two other Engines & trains from here to Weldon for the conveyance of the other half and unload it here for you to transport.
   Please give orders that the corn train shall be unloaded & sent back without delay. otherwise the army cannot be fed.
Yours truly
C O Sanford  {Superintendent, Petersburg RR}
