Mr. President

I am this far on my way to Lexington N. C. and am fully possessed of the imperfect management of the Piedmont Rail Road. There are now 2,500 troops at Danville waiting for transportation to Greensboro On the Road from Danville to Greensboro they have neither wood nor water that can be relied on & you may depend on it if the road is not put under the same control from Charlotte to Danville I pass on every rate be it be transported per mile provisions to car and to General Lee. They have very deficient supply of wood & water to run the cars & not half the rolling stock that could be supplied if the road were put under the {control?} of Quarter Master Chisman at this place. The North Carolina Road which is Conducted by T J Sumner {Superintendent} at Co. Shops has a full supply of stock & he is represented as a man of extraordinary energy & capacity What I suggest is that this Road from Danville to this place be empressed & put in the Charge of the same Superintendent from Charlotte to Danville That it be done will mean capability, if it is not done you will have no provisions. nor will you transport troops.
A days delay will be fatal
