Vicksburg, April 25, 1862

Maj. Rob't B. Hart
Mil. Supt R. R.

Dear Sir,
Enclosed I send you a statement of our Conductor of a soldiers train exhibiting an act of outrage, in taking violent possession of our cars and taking them to Mobile. There should be military protection afforded our trains; we are greatly in need of the few cars we have for the transportation of Governm't Freight, now waiting to be taken off from various points of our road. If consistent with your views, I hope you will issue an order that will enable us to have a military guard on our passenger & soldier trains to prevent a recurrence of such highhanded acts of outrage.
I am waiting with great solicitude for the arrival of the 150 cars & ten engines we are expecting under your requisition.
Every description of Govt freight in large amounts, are held in waiting for transportation facilities. Expedite our agt as much as possible.
Very Respectfully
M. Emanuel

The charge in this case is a grave one. Certain officers with soldiers of a Texas Regt. forcibly seized a train of the Southern Railroad Co & carried it to Mobile. If the charge be true these officers deserve punishment. I have written to the President of the Road to furnish a statement of the case ??? on oath, & ????? that it be forwarded to the Commander of this Force in Va whither the officers charged with the offence have gone.
Respectfully
