General, |
The Southern Rail Road,
formerly running from Vicksburg to Meridian, 140 Miles, but since Grants
occupation of Jackson previous to the Siege of Vicksburg in May 1863
Meridian & Jackson have been its termini, has been greatly injured by
the efforts of the enemy to destroy it, as well as by the want of
implements & material necessary to keep in repair both the road &
rolling stock. If we could ship cotton for the purpose of obtaining such
supplies as are required, it would greatly contribute to the safety,
durability & efficient operation of the road. I respectfully request
that you will give me a permit for that object authorising me to send
within the enemy's lines one hundred bales of cotton more or less, as
may be required by the necessities of the road. Please hand the permit
to Maj L. J. Fleming Ch Engr & Genl Supt of the M&O RR Co
{Mobile & Ohio RR}. If I have not asked for
the permit in the proper form, please have it framed to suit your views. |
I have the honor General |
to subscribe myself |
