{A hogshead of sugar weighed
about 1100 pounds. I estimate the following weights for the other
items: a barrel of sugar, 250 pounds; a barrel of molasses, 250
pounds; a half barrel of molasses, 125 pounds. This would total almost
3 1/2 million pounds and would require 213 cars to transport it. At 15
cars to the train, this sugar movement required the equivalent of 14
complete trains in only 40 days.} |
