Capt.,
I learn that very little progress was made in destroying the R. R. {San Antonio & Mexican Gulf RR} yesterday, owing to an idea prevalent that the order to that effect would be countermanded. I desire to say to the Genl. that I have said to the parties interested that there was no hope of his changing the order & that what I undertook to do I would do as intended. I sent all the force at my command yesterday with proper tools, under Capt. Cunningham, by Col. Darden's order; and am not responsible for needless delay.
His purpose for me to say that it will probably take the present negro force two weeks to break up the road, working faithfully, and at least a month as they are now proceeding, as I am advised.
