I arrived here on 11th expecting to
receive the stocks and ship the next day, but owning to some
misunderstanding with the Qr Master at Boston Station they were not
shipped from there until my arrival there I sent one car load (1800)
forward this morning loaded them yesterday (Sunday) as soon as they
arrived, this is singular route to ship stores, they have to come down
the river in Bateau which will not carry but 8 boxes at a load, 12, if
the water will admit but it is very low at present. I will remain
between here & Boston Station until they all arrive & leave here, as
there is about 200 tons of freight laying here for shipments & if I
leave them they will be thrown behind and judging the importance of
their arrival in Macon I will not leave without hearing from you -- the
means of transportation over this road is very limited
{Boston Station is on the Richmond & Danville RR
-- probably means Roanoke Valley RR has limited rolling stock}
they not having but 4 freight cars & one engine but by seeing the
President of the Raleigh & Gaston Road in person I got cars from his
road to load here & run through to Weldon without reloading at Valley
Junction, I am doing all in my power to deliver the stocks at Macon as
early as possible, & hope my course will meet your favor. If you have
any instructions or orders I would be glad to receive them at Weldon. |
