Sir, |
Your letter of the 28th has just been
received. |
I have made application to the Quarter
Master in charge of transportation at Montgomery for fifty cars to carry
the machinery, materials &c from this post {on the
Montgomery & West Point RR}, and shall not get a reply for two
days. In the meantime I shall proceed to prepare for a movement, as the
enemy is reported at Selma and may at any moment come in this direction. |
We are without any positive information
here and at an isolated point like this where the mail comes
irregularly, it is much to be regretted that we cannot be kept
constantly advised of the exact position of the enemy. I regret very
much you cannot furnish me any funds as we are two months in arrears to
the employees and have some outstanding bills both a few that I should
like to settle. The payment of the men however is of primary importance,
as they are generally poor and entirely dependent upon the product of
their labors and in view of a move to Athens they would find it almost
impossible to get along without means, and I regret to say that I am
entirely out at this moment. |
I have sent into the country today calling
on the planters for the use of their teams but do not know yet what the
result is, but I fear some trouble in getting the requisite numbers of
wagons to transport us to the depot which is six miles off and a bad
road leading to it. I am anxiously looking for a telegram from you
ordering me to move, as every moments delay is precious. |
I am very respy |
