Colonel,
I have several messengers in the city just arrived from the south in charge of wool. They have been on the way from 40 to 60 days. The compensation which is allowed them, 5$ per day, will hardly pay their expenses not including transportation with which they are furnished.
I ask, in consideration that the labor has been hard & very disagreeable, that I be allowed to pay them $7.50 per day, or, such sum as may seem to you fair.
Very respfy &c
